STUDY CONTENDS FRACKING HAS BEEN ECONOMIC BUST TO COMMUNITIES

A new study contends that natural gas-producing counties along the Marcellus Shale gas reserve have not benefited from fracking. The report by the Ohio River Valley Institute says 22 counties in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia that produce almost all the natural gas from the reserve lost more than ten-thousand jobs since 2008. The economic outcome also reflects that nearly 48-thousand residents moved away from the region since the start of the fracking boom. The report says the economic decline in the counties has continued, despite a boost in natural gas prices and production in recent years.
