TRANSGENDER WOMAN CLAIMS VIOLATION OF RIGHTS IN PRE-TRIAL DETENTION

A transgender woman has filed a lawsuit against the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, alleging a violation of her constitutional rights. Chelsea Gilliam was locked-up before an assault trial and says while at the Baltimore City Correctional Center was forced to live and shower with men, was sexually assaulted and denied hormone treatment. Attorney Eve Hill with the law form of Brown, Goldstein and Levy says there was no excuse for the way the state treated her and violated its own rules for the treatment of transgender inmates. In a statement the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services says while it cannot comment on a pending lawsuit, it can say the Department takes very seriously – and treats with urgency – the protection of every single incarcerated person’s dignity and safety.
