A bill to create a statewide reparations commission has been sent to Maryland Governor Wes Moore. Both the state House and Senate passed the measure to establish the Maryland Reparations Commission which would be tasked with studying and making recommendations relating to appropriate benefits for individuals whose ancestors were enslaved or impacted by inequitable government policies. If the governor – a Democrat – signs the bill, the commission would be required to submit a preliminary report by January 1st, 2027, with the final report due in November of that year. The Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland says the measure would be a critical step toward justice and repair in the state.
