NEW PROGRAM WILL STUDY EFFECT OF DECREASED WIC PRE-NATAL CARE

Geisinger Health System has received a 400-thousand-dollar grant to study how the WIC program affects prenatal care. The funds from the American Heart Association will be used to study the effects of how the Pennsylvania Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) affects women’s health before their babies arrive. Since the benefits have been dropping over the last 20 years, program enrollment has dropped to less than half of eligible Pennsylvanians. Researchers want to find out if the drop in WIC participation has contributed to premature births and low birth weight, as well as overall healthcare cost savings.
