The Anne Arundel County Public School System is the eighth Maryland school district to sue Meta, Google, ByteDance and Snap Inc. for their alleged roles in the youth mental health crisis. The lawsuit claims sites like Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube are harming students, damaging their mental health and increasing burdens for school districts. The lawsuit also claims the social media companies know about the negative impacts but they continue to prioritize profit over the well-being of children. The suit alleges that the defendants’ growth is a product of choices they made to design and operate their platforms in ways that exploit the users into spending more time on their sites, intentionally creating a mental health crisis among America’s youth.
