PARKING AUTHORITY OPERATIONS DISCUSSED AT COUNCIL MEETING

The city of Cumberland may have to increase taxes unless parking fees are increased. City Administrator Jeff Silka noted during the meeting that the perception there is no parking in downtown Cumberland is wrong, and that parking is revenue-dependent, and should be funded by users and travelers. To encourage patronage of downtown Cumberland during the renovation project, Silka proposed parking incentives at the George Street garage. One suggestion is to make the first two hours of parking free; those parking there would be required to check in and out at the George Street garage’s kiosk.
